Architectural Guidence Request Gemini as the Conversational AI for an Advanced Home Assistant Smart Home

I am designing a long-term residential smart home centered on Home Assistant, and I would appreciate your guidance on the architecture that Google would recommend.

My objective is not simply to control lights or appliances. I am building a conversational home assistant that behaves more like an intelligent household computer than a traditional voice assistant. Home Assistant will remain the automation engine and authoritative source for all devices, entities, automations, and household logic.

The experience I hope to create is similar to speaking with a knowledgeable household assistant. For example, instead of issuing rigid commands, I would like to say things such as:

  • “Computer, I’m cooking.”
  • “Computer, it’s getting dark in here.”
  • “Computer, I’m leaving for the evening.”
  • “Computer, make the house comfortable.”

The AI should reason about the request, understand the current state of the home, determine which Home Assistant entities or automations should be used, and carry out the appropriate actions.

I am currently evaluating several voice ecosystems, including Amazon Alexa and Google’s Gemini platform. My primary interest is determining which architecture will be the most capable, maintainable, and future-proof over the next several years.

Specifically, I would appreciate Google’s guidance on the following questions:

  1. Is Gemini Live the recommended conversational interface for an advanced Home Assistant deployment of this type?
  2. What architecture would Google recommend for integrating Gemini with Home Assistant while allowing Home Assistant to remain the primary automation engine?
  3. Is Google’s preferred approach based on Gemini function calling, MCP, another tool interface, or another architecture entirely?
  4. Does Google envision Gemini serving as the conversational layer while Home Assistant performs the actual device control?
  5. What is Google’s recommendation for whole-home voice endpoints? Are Google Nest devices expected to become the preferred Gemini voice interface for custom Home Assistant systems, or are desktop and custom voice clients the intended direction?
  6. Are there reference architectures, sample projects, or developer documentation that demonstrate conversational AI controlling an external automation platform such as Home Assistant?
  7. What latency should developers realistically expect for conversational home control using Gemini Live?
  8. Looking ahead three to five years, does Google view Gemini as a platform capable of supporting an intelligent, context-aware residential assistant comparable to high-end systems such as Josh AI, while remaining open and extensible?

My objective is to build a smart home that can continue evolving as AI capabilities improve without requiring the automation platform itself to be replaced.
