Scaling High-Stakes Media Workflows on GCP: How We Replaced Fragile Toolchains with Workspace Drive Vaults & Autonomous Telemetry

Hey everyone,

We are building FAST OS (Swenson Media), an AI-native studio operating system designed to eliminate administrative friction and legal delivery bottlenecks across physical film and television production. As an accepted member of the Google for Startups: Cloud Program, we wanted to share our architecture pattern for handling heavy multi-gigabyte binary assets alongside sub-millisecond operational state machines on GCP.

The Challenge: Beyond Low-Code & Prohibitive Egress

Film productions generate massive data exhaust—from 4K ProRes 4444 XQ master cuts and 5.1 M&E audio stems to cryptographic legal chain-of-title ledgers.

Many productions attempt to patch this together using ad-hoc low-code tables or manual spreadsheet trackers. As threads in this community frequently highlight, low-code abstractions quickly hit versioning regressions and schema limits once teams scale. Furthermore, traditional cloud object storage (e.g., standard S3/GCS buckets) exposes indie productions to unpredictable egress fees whenever global distributors, sales agents, and post supervisors pull multi-terabyte delivery packages.

Our GCP & Workspace Architecture

We anchored our production deployment on Google Cloud and Google Workspace enterprise infrastructure:

  • Compute Host: Containerized Docker Compose deployment on GCP Compute Engine (e2-standard on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS), fronted by Cloudflare Zero Trust tunnels for SSL termination and DDoS defense.

  • Persistent Ledger & Performance: Local SQLite in WAL mode with composite B-tree indexing on SSD persistent disks, maintaining an average query response latency of 0.0205 ms (well below our 0.10 ms SLA).

  • The 1.5PB Workspace Drive Vault Conduit: Rather than pushing heavy assets through general API gateways, our background worker queues chunked uploads directly into a provisioned Google Workspace Drive pool (5TB per seat across our team). We automatically provision standardized distribution trees (/Delivery/[Title]/[Legal|Music|Picture|Credits]) and store Drive file IDs directly in our database ledger.

  • Autonomous Telemetry (Prodigi): An autonomous audit daemon runs background sweeps to evaluate milestone countdowns ($T_0$), detect clearance gaps, enforce 24-hour notification deduplication cooldowns, and stamp dynamic SVG watermarks on acquisition exports.

Discussion for the Community

For other founders and engineering leads handling heavy digital assets on Google Cloud: How are you balancing Google Drive API service-account rate limits against direct Cloud Storage (GCS) buckets when orchestrating concurrent multi-gigabyte uploads for external non-technical clients?
