Request for review: Gemini API key creation fails with The request is suspicious

Hello Google AI Studio team,

On September 12, 2026 (KST, UTC+9), I could not create a Gemini API key in Google AI Studio. The error contains the exact text:

Failed to generate API key, The request is suspicious. Please try again.

I reproduced this by manually clicking the create button in Safari on macOS. I also have a screenshot of the same error from the manual attempt.

What I confirmed:

  • My existing project is shown as Free Tier in AI Studio.
  • AI Studio Billing shows that no billing account is linked.
  • Creating an API key in the existing project fails.
  • Creating a new project also fails with the same “The request is suspicious” error.
  • The failure happens before an API key is issued. I have not reached the stage of making Gemini API requests for this setup.

I am trying to use the Gemini API Free Tier for a personal, noncommercial application. Could you please review these failed creation requests and advise which account or project checks are needed to resolve the issue through the normal support process?

I found a matching report in the official forum: Unable to generate Gemini API key – “The request is suspicious”.

Are you perhaps using one of the following:

  • A VPN.
  • Shared IP address.

Workaround is to use an Android phone and try from there.
I am not a Google employee, so I can’t do more to help.
