Gemini TTS blocks a sentence of classic Hindi literature as PROHIBITED_CONTENT

Summary

Gemini text-to-speech refuses to narrate one sentence from Godan (गोदान), Munshi
Premchand’s 1936 novel and a standard text of Hindi literature. The request returns
promptFeedback.blockReason: PROHIBITED_CONTENT and no audio. The block reproduces on
gemini-3.8-flash-tts and on gemini-3.1-flash-tts-preview, in batch and interactive
modes, with and without a style prompt.

The sentence is social commentary spoken by a character in a debate about women’s roles.
It is not sexual content. The block leaves a silent gap in an otherwise complete
audiobook.

most likely because of the word नग्नता (“nakedness”).

Our production request adds a narration style in parts[0].speechMetadata.style (a
cultured literary reading) plus temperature: 1.0 and topP: 0.95; it is blocked the
same way.

Impact

We publish narrated editions of public-domain Hindi classics for language learners
(kaho.ai). A blocked sentence becomes silence in the audiobook, and the listener loses a
line of the text. PROHIBITED_CONTENT is not one of the harm categories safetySettings
configures, so the only workaround we know of is altering the author’s text.

Request

Please review whether PROHIBITED_CONTENT should apply to non-sexual literary text like
this, or provide a way for audiobook and education use cases to narrate it.

I am not specifying any safety settings which as per that page should default to blocking actions being off. Hence my original report still stands.

The default Off threshold applies only to the four adjustable safety filter categories (Harassment, Hate speech, Sexually explicit, and Dangerous) (Safety filtering per request), whereas PROHIBITED_CONTENT is returned by built-in core harm protections that remain active regardless of safetySettings (Safety filters).

As documented under Safety filters:

“In addition to the adjustable safety filters, the Gemini API has built-in protections against core harms, such as content that endangers child safety. These types of harm are always blocked and cannot be adjusted.”

To generate audio for this literary sentence on gemini-3.8-flash-tts without altering the original Hindi wording, you could try splitting the sentence into two separate generateContent requests (the first part up to "बाँहों" and the second part starting from "या अपनी...") and concatenate the returned audio segments. Again, this is just a workaround, and is not guaranteed to work on each generation because certain words in your source text are triggering the safety settings.
