Google AI Pro + AI Studio privacy: Does one billed API project protect Playground chats from training?

I’m trying to understand the data privacy implications of using Google AI Studio with a Google AI Pro subscription, and I’d really appreciate input from people who actually use this setup.

I have a Google AI Pro subscription and I use Google AI Studio’s normal Playground chat interface. I’m not talking about manually making Gemini API calls. I’m talking about the regular AI Studio Playground.

My main concern is data privacy, specifically whether Google can use my prompts, uploaded files, conversations, and generated responses to improve/train models or have them reviewed by humans.

From what I understand from Google’s current Gemini API/AI Studio documentation, there are two relevant things:

  1. Google AI Pro gives expanded usage limits in AI Studio.

  2. Google says that AI Studio prompts are treated under the Paid Services data terms as long as at least one API project has billing enabled.

At the same time, Google also says AI Studio usage remains free unless you actually link/use a paid API key, which seems to suggest that a Playground conversation that isn’t linked to a paid API key can remain free.

So I’m trying to figure out whether this setup actually works:

Google AI Pro account
→ continue using normal AI Studio Playground
→ retain my Pro/expanded AI Studio quota
→ create a separate Google Cloud project with billing enabled / Plan: Paid
→ do NOT use that project’s paid API key in my normal Playground conversations
→ get the Paid Services privacy/data-protection treatment for my AI Studio data
→ but still use the normal Google AI Pro Playground quota without being charged for API usage

In other words, can I essentially have:

Pro subscription = my free/expanded AI Studio usage

while:

one separate billed project = enough to put my AI Studio account under the Paid Services/no-training data terms

without causing all of my normal Playground generations to become billable API requests?

I’m specifically interested in the privacy/data-protection side, not the API rate limits.

Thank you for your inputs!

Why not ask the app itself?

i made a simple “hello world in 35 languages “ app

Checked and made sure I was on a free key. And using my paid account with this you no longer are using a free allowance. What you get is more like a non chargeable allowance or quota that resets eventually

I Pasted your question in and in its own verbose manner gave me the answer. Buried in the middle was this

  • No Model Training: Google does not use your prompts, uploaded files, or generated outputs to train foundational models.
  • Data Confidentiality: Your data remains private to your project and account according to Google Cloud’s strict data processing and privacy commitments.

I often ask it about things when the thinking icon is spinning i will ask what it is thinking about or why did the last request take so long and how many tokens used (when i asked 3.8 flash this it was honest and told me 98% of the tokens for the last request were wasted) where did it get information and is it offical or internet gossip

Sometimes you will get a lot of gibberish and waffle but usually tell the truth if it is too much ask it to explain in plain english in a few paragraphs

You will notice I use 3.5 lite it does the job and not endlessly think and use tokens like later models i only use them when needed remember google charge by the milli second for core use

Thanks for your response!

I did actually ask the model (and other LLMs) before posting, but because I’m handling proprietary data that legally cannot be leaked or shared, I need to go strictly by official documentation. LLMs often hallucinate policies or mix up consumer, developer, and enterprise terms, so their outputs aren’t legally binding.

Also, I’m not using the app creation or API deployment side of Google AI Studio like in your example. I’m just using the regular chat/Playground interface to converse with the models. So there isn’t a “usage” section like in the app creation panel showing whether my session is tied to my Google AI Pro subscription, a free key, or if it’s inheriting the paid data privacy protections.

Could I ask where you’re located? As I understand it, people using AI Studio in the EEA, Switzerland, or the UK get data privacy by default even on the free tier. But I’m currently located in Canada.

According to the official Gemini API Additional Terms of Service under “How Google Uses Your Data / Unpaid Services”:

“When you use Unpaid Services, including, for example, Google AI Studio and the unpaid quota on Gemini API, Google uses the content you submit to the Services and any generated responses to provide, improve, and develop Google products and services and machine learning technologies… To help with quality and improve our products, human reviewers may read, annotate, and process your API input and output… Do not submit sensitive, confidential, or personal information to the Unpaid Services.”

“If you’re in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom, the terms under ‘How Google uses Your Data’ in ‘Paid Services’ apply to all Services, including Google AI Studio and unpaid quota in the Gemini API, even though they are offered free of charge.”

Outside of those regions, according to Google’s billing documentation, the only way free AI Studio usage inherits “Paid Services” privacy (no training, no human review) is if the account has at least one active Google Cloud billing project attached.

I just wanted to verify that with someone who’s familiar with this because the wording was a little bit confusing for me, and I am not sure if my playground conversations would be protected simply by having a paid key within my account but not necessarily linking that key to the playground conversations I am having, i.e using the “free generations” (with the extended quotas provided by my Google AI Pro subscription)

Thanks again for setting up that example app!

Hello @El_Mehdi_Seddougui ,

Yes. Having at least one Google Cloud project with an active billing account (Paid under Plan on the API keys page) places your Google AI Studio access under the Paid Services Terms of Service (see the Billing FAQ).

Your Playground chats continue to use your non-billable Google AI Pro daily quota allowance unless you explicitly select a paid API key for that session. You can verify your account status in the top-right Settings (gear icon) menu of AI Studio, where it displays Your account ToS: Paid services.
