Gemini API returns HTTP 403: "Your project has been denied access" on a new Free Tier project

Hello Google AI team,

I am trying to use the Gemini API from Google Apps Script with a newly created Google Cloud / Google AI Studio project.

Project information

  • Project name: Version1
  • Project ID: gen-lang-client-00963962..
  • Billing tier shown in Google AI Studio: Free tier
  • API: Gemini API / Generative Language API
  • Method: GenerateContent

The API request reaches the Generative Language API, but every request returns:

HTTP 403: Your project has been denied access. Please contact support.

I checked the project in Google Cloud Console. The API dashboard shows requests reaching:

google.ai.generativelanguage.v1beta.GenerativeService.GenerateContent

but the error rate is 100%.

I have also verified that:

  • The API key is restricted to Gemini API.
  • The key is not an unrestricted API key.
  • 2-Step Verification is enabled on the Google account.
  • The project is shown as Free tier in Google AI Studio.
  • I have not included or exposed the API key in this post.

Could you please check whether this project has an account-level or project-level access restriction and advise how I can request a manual review or restore Gemini API access?

Since you’re on the free tier with no billing attached, please try the below steps:

  1. Check Model Availability & Rate Limits:

    • Ensure that the model you are requesting is available on your current plan. For example, not all models are available on the free tier. You can verify model availability, quotas, and limits on the AI Studio Rate Limit dashboard.

  2. Ensure you have completed age verification by navigating to Google Account Age Verification and verifying date of birth in Google Account Personal Info.

  3. Once age verification is configured, retry your request or create a new API key in Google AI Studio.

  4. If completing these steps still does not restore access (or if using a model requiring a paid tier), you might want to consider adding prepayment credits directly in Google AI Studio and/ or attaching a Google Cloud Billing account in the Google Cloud Console. Please note this will mean you lose your free tier quota.

Thank you. I added and verified the date of birth information on the Google account and retried the API request, but the result is still the same:

HTTP 403: Your project has been denied access. Please contact support.

I also checked the Rate Limits page in Google AI Studio, and it currently shows “Unavailable” for this project.

The API key is already restricted to the Gemini API.

Could you please advise whether this indicates a project/account-level restriction and whether a manual review is required?
