"Failed to create project: permission denied" on AI Studio with Google One Pro account

Hi everyone,

I am encountering a permission error when trying to create a project or use the Free Tier on Google AI Studio with my primary personal account, and I would like to check if others are experiencing the same issue or if a staff member can help look into this backend account state.

Here are the details and observations:

  • Account Type: Personal @gmail.com account (Not a Google Workspace, company, or school account).

  • Subscription: Google One Pro subscriber.

  • GCP Project Quota: I only have 2 existing GCP projects under this account, so project quota limits should not be an issue.

Issue Description:

  1. When attempting to create a new project directly within AI Studio, it fails with the error message:

    Failed to create project: permission denied. Please try again.

  2. When I import an existing GCP project (which does not have a billing account attached), the Plan Tier shows as “Unavailable” and the status displays as “Restricted”. Since there is no billing account attached, it should default to the Free Tier, but it does not function.

Comparison / Reproduction:

  • I tested the same steps using a standard, free personal account (without a Google One subscription). On that account, project creation succeeds instantly, the Free Tier is assigned correctly, and API calls work without any issues.

It seems like there might be a backend provisioning or permission flag conflict specific to certain accounts or Google One Pro account profiles when interacting with AI Studio.

Is anyone else facing this exact issue, or is there any way to reset/re-sync the AI Studio backend permissions for my account?

I just checked, and the issue is resolved on my end.
I can now create projects without permission errors, and the API key is generated and working as expected under the free tier.
Out of curiosity, could you share what caused this issue if it’s possible to disclose?
