AI Studio UI loads, but generation and project creation fail with PERMISSION_DENIED / Region not supported

Hello,

I am trying to understand whether this behavior is expected and what officially supported option is available for my situation. I am not requesting a workaround or bypass.

Environment:

  • My direct network geolocates to mainland China.
  • With a US network node, the public egress geolocates to Orem, Utah, United States.
  • The egress ASN is AS26*** FiberState, LLC, a hosting/data-center network.
  • Google Account age verification is complete.
  • No home or work address is configured in the Google Account.
  • The account currently has no available Google Cloud project or Gemini API key.

Observed behavior:

  1. Previously, opening Google AI Studio redirected directly to the “Available regions” page.
  2. On September 3, 2026, the AI Studio Playground UI started loading successfully.
  3. Any generation request still fails with:
    “Failed to generate content: permission denied. Please try again.”
  4. The response area shows:
    “An internal error has occurred.”
  5. The API key selector shows:
    “No API key selected.”
  6. When I try to create an API key, the project selector shows:
    “No Cloud Projects Available.”
  7. Opening https://aistudio.google.com/projects redirects to the Available Regions page.
  8. The browser console reports:
    “RpcError: Region not supported.”
    A recent occurrence was at 2026-09-03 03:04:20 UTC.

I tested both Japan and US network nodes and both smart routing and global routing. The account’s age status is verified.

Questions:

  1. Is it expected that the frontend UI can load while generation, project creation, and API key creation remain blocked by the regional compliance check?
  2. Is the check based on the user’s actual physical location, the public egress IP, the ASN classification, the Google Account, or a combination of these signals?
  3. Since mainland China is not listed as an available region, is there an officially supported Google product or enterprise route available to developers located there?
  4. If this is an IP geolocation or ASN false positive, what information should be submitted privately for review?

For privacy and security, I have not included my complete IP address, email address, or any credentials.

Google AI Studio and the Gemini API are not currently available in your region. Access to the service is limited to the supported countries and territories listed in the Available regions documentation.
