AI Studio AutoSave Failure – Conversation Progress Lost After Refresh

This has been happening several times to me recently. It really makes you wonder what OpenAI is doing right and what Google is doing wrong that causes this - because really with Google Docs, it was Google that first really gave us the autosave concept in the first place.

I’ve never once had this issue with Claude or ChatGPT.

This wasn’t even after a refresh, simply after returning to the tab.

8 hours of scripting gone into nowhere

Just lost few hours of work! Frustrated! AI Studio can’t even save the conversation! Very BAD!

I encountered the same problem yesterday, where the save button kept spinning all night without doing anything. It also blocked the copy and delete buttons. All other functions of the conversation worked normally, except for saving. My entire conversation was only 60K tokens, and saving failed at around 40K. Fortunately, I discovered this in time and exported all the chat history. Everything is fine except for the poor reading experience.

This bug still exists, as of Jul 26, 2025. I have had my conversation roll back to an earlier state, with no way of recovery.

Had that happen to me a few months ago but it seemingly had gotten fixed

Small tip if there’s an error saying it failed to save. Don’t go further in the convo as saving is blocked until you refresh the page

Bug still exists:-( I had auto save enabled.

Same bug. Autosave was suddenly off, many hours of work lost. Only attached files are in google drive. This kind of critical bug is unacceptable in any kind of environment intended for production use and as a the topic suggests it lingers for a few months now. It’s been almost ten years since last time I’ve ran into a non-working saving mechanism in an app resulting in a such loss of data without any recovery option.

The same thing happened to me yesterday in 2 accounts (personal and work). I have found several posts in different communities about this issue for months without an answer from Google. I lost hours and hours of work, as have many of you.

Same thing happend to me.
I lost my AiStudio chat history, the result of two weeks of hard work!

I’d like to recover the content from any post request history from August 9, 2025, or just the post text.
Here’s the chat URL: https://aistudio.google.com/prompts/1ojVy6KaEJ_m_ajORx33taRzK0-XLcNBX
Urgent!
Thank you!

I had similar issue. I was chatting and developing for about 1 hour, then decided to hit the SAVE button (for the first time), then inadvertently refreshed the page and POOF all my prior chat history was gone and referencing decisions made during that time were completely unknown to this new agent.

I’m unsure whether this erasing of the chat conversation was caused but hitting the SAVE button or by refreshing the page.

I have the same issue - although i did deploy a working version of my app I have no i dea how to bring it back into ai studio

can you check my issue as well govind?

I’m just starting with AI Studio and was really confused when I lost 2 days of chat on an issue that was almost solved. After checking my google drive the app is listed but clicking on the file opens AI studio but no chat history. So I am gathering that isn’t how this is supposed to work!? Any way to fix it. AI studio is useless to me like this, and so many other choices right now, but I am google for everything else so thought I would give them first kick at the can. So far they missed.

Hey everyone, I think I’ve identified the root cause of this issue and how to resolve it. The inability to save likely stems from the prompt text being excessively long, preventing the browser from fully loading the historical content. Consequently, the save process doesn’t receive a complete document, creating a blocked state. What we need to do is manually scroll back to the very beginning of the document using the mouse wheel or similar method to reload the entire content. Once you do this, you should find the save icon functioning normally.
